Flags of Africa

In our company, we produce flags of Africa. It is a continent distinguished by immense diversity, including ethnic and linguistic diversity. This is evident in the symbols of Africa we discuss โ€“ behind the flags often lie incredibly interesting stories. It is worth mentioning at least a few of them.

Flags of Africa โ€“ what do they symbolize?

Here’s what lies behind the flags of several African countries.

Flag of the Republic of South Africa

One example of a flag worth discussing is the flag of the Republic of South Africa. The symbol on it, shaped like the letter “Y,” signifies the unity of the country without apartheid. The colors: red, blue, and white indicate the white settlers living in South Africa. At the same time, the colors green, gold, and black signify African resistance movements. It’s also worth mentioning references to the previous flags of this country, where the color red represented blood, green โ€“ land, and blue โ€“ sky.

Flag of Morocco

One of the most characteristic flags of Africa is the flag of Morocco, quite ascetic in form. In the center of the red field is a green pentagram. The present star replaced a six-pointed one in 1915, but to this day, the reason is unknown. It is worth noting that the green itself symbolizes Islam, and the five points represent the five basic principles of Islam. It should also be noted that the first flag of Morocco, similar to the current one, was created around 1666.

Flag of Senegal

When it comes to flags of Africa, it’s worth mentioning, for example, the flag of Senegal, which consists of three vertical stripes: green, yellow, and red. In the middle, there is also a green star symbolizing development as well as freedom. Interestingly, the three colors of the stripes do not have an official interpretation, and only one of them suggests that green represents the forest, red represents fire, and yellow is the color of the Sahel, an African geographic region.

Flag of Zimbabwe

It’s also worth looking at the flag of Zimbabwe, which stands out with a very interesting design. It is divided into 7 stripes (green, gold, red, and black). Each of these colors symbolizes something different (green โ€“ agriculture, gold โ€“ mineral wealth, red โ€“ blood shed during the struggle for freedom, black โ€“ the black majority). On the left side, there is a white triangle, and on it, in turn, a red star with the Zimbabwe Bird, the national symbol of this country.
